1. Product 

 

 YL Methylparaben/ Phenoxyethanol Analyzer

 

2. Purpose


 YL Methylparaben Analyzer efficiently analyzes Methylparaben and Phenoxyethanol which are very commonly used as preservatives for cosmetics, drugs and other skincare products but they may cause toxicity at higher concentration to human body. 


 For they have an absorbance at UV/Vis wavelength range, these are usually analyzed by HPLC after extracted by organic solvents such as Methanol or DMF.


 Our dedicated analyzer for Methylparaben/Phenoxyethanol supplies a photo diode array detector to provide accurate results separating all other impurities in the sample. 

 

3. Analysis of Methylparaben/ Phenoxyethanol 
 

1) Principle of analysis


 Both Methylparaben and Phenoxyethanol have an absorbance at UV/Vis wavelength range which means these can be analyzed at the maximum absorption.

 

2) Caution


 The maximum absorption(λmax) differs depending on compounds. For the maximum absorption of Methylparaben is 257 nm and Phenoxyethanol’s is 271 nm, if analyzing at a single wavelength by UV/Vis detector, one of them loses sensitivity which means the analysis can be proceeded efficiently.

 

 This analysis has to be done in a gradient mode to have good resolution of both Methylparaben and Phenoxyethanol. It is very important to set the gradient to mode for retention time (RT) of these 2 compounds not to get overlapped and remove the other compounds in the sample that will be also eluted. 

 

 Even though the analysis condition is well set to get a different RTfor each compound after making standard samples, there could be some other compounds in the sample that have same RT as standard samples”.

 

 Because UV/Vis detector recognizes the wrong compounds as standard samples if the RT is same, PDA detector is recommended for an accurate qualitative analysis to check the exact spectrum.

 

 If RT is same but spectrum is not, it means that this could be a different compound. Specially, Parabens are usually analyzed at the low concentration and it appears occasionally even though it’s not added. These can be residuals from some kind of extractions, the spectrum that can see whether there Parabens are or not is essentially needed.

 

3) Sample & standard preparation 
 
 Skins & Lotions


 Sample 2 ~ 3 g + MeOH 10 mL -- Hand-shaking for dispersion
                            Ultrasonication (20 min)
 

 Mixed Solvent / 50 mL MeOH Mass UP
 
 Filtering the supernatant of extracted solution to 0.45 um filter
 
 Analysis by HPLC/PDA

 

 Creams & Sun Creams


 Sample 2 ~ 3 g + DMF 10 mL -- Hand-shaking for dispersion
                            Ultrasonication (10 min)


 Mixed Solvent / 50 mL MeOH Mass UP
                           Ultrasonication (20 min)


 Filtering the supernatant of extracted solution to 0.45 um filter
 
 Analysis by HPLC/PDA

 It is confirmed that Peak 1 and Phenoxy ethanol are same compounds for their spectrum patterns are matched but spectrum patterns of Peak 2 and Methyl paraben are not same which means these are not the same compounds but have same RT.
